Why is Angel Reese benched? What we know about LSU star before tonight's game

LSU, the preseason No. 1 team, was walloped by Colorado in its opener on Nov. 6. An unclose game saw the Tigers lose 92-78. Reese scored 15 points and grabbed 12 rebounds but shot 6-of-15 from the field, missing many close shots.

Her frustration was evident throughout the game. After three games, LSU coach Kim Mulkey benched Reese for the second half of a 109-79 win against Kent State on Nov. 14. That night, Reese scored 11 points in 13 minutes. Mulkey said it was “coach’s decision” to not play Reese in the second half.

Three days later, on Nov. 17, Reese missed the 73-50 win over Southeastern Louisiana, sparking speculation. She wasn't benched. Mulkey again refused to discuss Reese.

Mulkey claimed in her postgame press conference that Angel was clearly not in uniform. We expect to see Angel soon as she is part of the basketball squad. I'm done answering. End of story. All you need to know, OK?

What has Angel Reese said about benching? Through this struggle, Reese has not talked to the media. On Sunday, she wrote on X, formerly Twitter, “please don’t believe everything you read.”

Since Oct. 24, Reese hasn't posted to her Instagram grid. She uploaded a Deion Sanders video on her Instagram stories late Sunday night. Sanders says, “Look at me,” in the video.

What makes you think I care about your view of me? My self-perception differs from yours. You did not make me, so don't break me. You can't kill me since you didn't build me.

God established me, therefore you can't hurt me. I was that guy—a game changer. But what would change? Absolutely nothing. I'm not playing the game, but you judge me. I adore it yet don't care. I wish the world thought like that.

Young folks, if you're out there, don't care what others think of you as long as it doesn't match yours. Not playing to make you like me. I already like myself. Im fine. Message for new people and the old school, not fools."
